If Noosa had only these things going for it, then it would be a pretty amazing destination.

But the reality is that that there are some wonderful other experiences to be had in Noosa if you’re prepared to look beyond the usual ‘headlines’ … and experiencing some of these less well known activities could really put the icing on your Noosa holiday cake !

So here are a few suggestions from us on some of the “different” things to see and do when you are next in the Noosa area. These are our “locals” tips.

1. Explore the Noosa River and waterways on a boat

If you love water, the beach is great but why stop there? On our classic boat cruises through Noosa Sound, the Noosa River and the Lakes, we are frequently told by our guests that they had no idea how expansive and beautiful the river is. In particular, how little time it takes to escape civilisation and enter areas that are remote, peaceful and natural. Seeing Noosa from the river unveils an entirely different dimension to this area that never fails to delight and there are lots of boating options for you to choose from.

2. Go for a bush walk and climb a mountain

There are many lovely bushwalks around the Noosa area and its not hard to find a map. (Just ask at the Visitor Information centre in Hastings Street).

As a family, we love combining our bush walk with a climb up one of the local mountains ( well, big hills). Two of our favourite climbs are at Mt. Coolum, about 20 minutes by road south of Noosa Heads, and at Mount Cooroora , which is reached from the town of Pomona, about 30 minutes north west of Noosa Heads.

3. Hire a bike and explore at leisure

We are keen bike riders and we love the fact that Noosa and the whole Sunshine Coast have a wonderful collection of bike paths. Maps are available from the previously mentioned visitor centre.

Hire a bike and you will be able to explore the parts of Noosa that you won’t see on any organised tour. We recommend:

• cruising around the streets of Noosa Sound to check out the lavish homes
• riding along Noosa Parade and then along the riverside – all the way to the regional art gallery at Tewantin and back
• doing the loop that starts at the bus station near Hastings Street, goes along Noosa Parade and then along Weyba Road and up into Noosa Junction. Then coast down the hill back to where you started
• riding through the streets of Noosa Waters. This is a canal residential estate in Noosaville and there are lots of amazing homes to be seen on this ride.

One of the beauties was only 3 weeks completed, fresh from it’s maker Kevin’s shed, and it was a knockout. Miss Rose was 3 years in the making and is a stunning display of craftsmanship and attention to detail.

We also enjoyed seeing one of our favourite Noosa boats – Liberty – back again, especially as it’s owner nearly didn’t make the regatta, as he had just flown in from the US overnight and was without his boat keys. However, a strong will overcame  that problem and he hot wired the boat to make sure he didn’t miss the proceedings!  Liberty is a 1950′s Chris Craft Capri. Another boat we had not seen before was in attendance – a 1955 Chris Craft Riviera aptly called Fifties Chic. This lovely runabout has come to Australia from Lake Tahoe, and Saturday was her first run in salt water.

Not all the boats on display were highly varnished mahogany boats. Some of the loveliest were very simple, elegant rowboats or pretty cruisers, including Marianne and Lady Pamela.

This year saw a change to the programme and after a couple of hours or so at the Marina, the boats headed upriver – with the fast boats reaching Lake Cooroibah, before heading back to Woods Bay in Noosa Sound for a BYO picnic for all crews. Noosa Journal photographer Andrew Seymour (thanks for the pic Andrew) snapped this shot of our happy crew on the Noosa Dream during this run up the river.

The picnic at Woods Bay was a lovely way to end the day – enjoying great food and wine and chatting with the other owners and crew. It also gave another opportunity for the boats to be on display to the public, at the beach.

If you missed this years Regatta, it is on the first Saturday of November every year…so make sure to put the 2012 date – Nov 3 – in your diary. If you love craftsmanship, beauty, the warmth of timber and the water, it really is a treat. Oh and a lot of men’s favourite part is the chance to see up close the powerful engines that are usually hidden behind those mahogany panels.

A very lovely friend of mine started a few years ago getting small photobooks printed of their holidays and special events and now has a lovely collection of mini books that just take you back to that special time or place. As the key models for us when we launched our business she also did a Noosa Dreamboats book, from the photos we supplied of them. And it is fantastic.

I loved this idea and always enjoy flicking through their books when visiting, so after much procrastination I started putting together some books of our own, starting with a book each for our two boys and then some photo books of amazing places we have been to including South America and Mexico. I also did a Noosa Dreamboats book featuring fantastic cruise photos and images we have taken in and around the Noosa River.

The latter (pictured above) has been a great tool for us showing people in the travel industry what we do and how much fun our customers have. And friends love flicking through the pages as it sits on our coffee table.

So….the obvious thing was to offer it as an option for our customers. We currently take a few photos and email them to customers after each cruise. But now, if we know before the cruise that you would like a personal  photo book we take more photos and add them to some of our best river photographs in a 20 page,  gorgeous high quality photo book. The front cover is an image wrap hard cover and can be of you as a couple or group in the Noosa Dream, or we can use our own boat photo for the cover.

We want this to be a lasting memento that will give you many hours and years of pleasure, so the photos are printed on premium lustre finish photo paper and the hard cover book is machine stitched. It comes in a landscape format  25cm wide by 20 cm high.

You just know that these are the moments in life that create special memories.

Recently some stunning days and evenings have showcased the Noosa River particularly well. I’ve had my camera handy to capture some of the special scenes that nature has provided.

The reflections on the lake can be amazing too.

One of my favourite times on the river is the late afternoon. Noosa has amazing light which bathes everything in gold as the last hour or two of daylight unfolds.

Sometimes there are thousands of birds out there.

Last week the clouds created a wonderful mood as the sun was setting. Often they can be vermillion. On this day, the grey clouds had their own beauty.

Then as the dusk comes, the sky and river take on beautiful tones of purple, gold and blue. Sometimes the best shots are just before dark.

And with the last of the light, the atmosphere can be amazing.
